Fixed in both branches as of r3500.

We also have a 64 bit machine now so we hope to make some progress on this by 0. 8.0rc1 on win64 and debian/amd64

I have a new computer coming for home with a (dual-core) AMD64 + WinXP 64-bit, so I'll be able to help with this issue when it arrives (at least on the windows front).
